Good Wiring

Proper cabling and wiring of a network is the lowest cost of a network build-out, carries the highest rate of return over time, and out lasts 90% of all the devices attached to it!  Many companies seek out the cheapest provider for camera and data cabling but will stretch the budget on name brand network gear.  Your data cabling and security camera cabling will likely stay in place for 10 years or more.

If it looks good it likely is good…  Data cabling is both science and art during the installation.  If the wire closet or data center is neat, looks well-kept, and terminated properly then it will “look” good- and very likely perform great.  Why does looking good make a difference?  The installer took pride while routing the cables and KNOWS through training and experience how to make a solid network communicate.

Does it make a difference with Access Control or Security Cameras?  In a word- absolutely.  Most security cameras deployed today are connected with ethernet/data cable.  Access Control systems and Security Cameras are part of the network, and part of network security.  Most new lighting controls, access control, and security cameras now connect to the WAN (internet) for remote management.  All of these systems now find their way back to your wiring closet, and often time to your network switching gear.  So the importance is obvious- lots and lots of wires that lead back to one place.  Finding and fixing all these cables is much easier with proper cabling!

How do you know if the company you’re working with does good work?  Ask for seven (7) references, call a couple of them, and make at least one onsite visit.  Just look at the cables and see if they are installed like the cables in our picture above.  Spending more money on Category 6a Ethernet data cable is worthless if the installer does a sloppy job installing it.  Data cables are routed and mounted in specific ways to ensure they don’t lose signal quality.  Bad signal quality means poor video quality on security cameras and poor network speeds for your server/computers.  CABLING IS THE FOUNDATION AND BACKBONE OF A NETWORK.
